Nasarawa Amazons on Friday emerged the newest champions of the 2016/17 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) season.
The Lafia landladies achieved the feat with 1-0 win against challengers, Delta Queens in Friday’s NWPL Super 4 final at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Attacking midfielder, Amarachi Okoronkwo’s superb header in the 42nd minute which cut the Asaba side’s goalkeeper, Rita Akarekor napping proved adequate to hand the Lafia landladies the coveted trophy and championship prize money of three million Naira.
The side did not lose any match enroute to being crowned the champions after amassing heart-warming seven points during the round robin stage of the competition.
The NWPL Super 4 final witnessed a high turnout of dignitaries and government functionaries including the deputy governor of the host state, Edo, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu and his counterparts from Nasarawa state, Silas Dogara.
Representatives of the Delta state government were dutifully present to add colour to the grand finale as well as cheer the state campaigners, Delta Queens.
Super Falcons stars, Asisat Oshoala, Onome Ebi, and former Nigerian international, Maureen Mmadụ among others graced the colourful event.
Equally present are former Super Eagles defender and manager, Austin Eguavoen and former Nigeria Football Association (NFF) secretary general and national team coach, Fanny Amun and former Nigerian junior international, Tony Emedofor.
Aside the well spelled out prize money for the champions, runners-up and third placed team the hosts state government, Edo state gave each of the NWPL Super 4 teams a princely sum of five hundred thousand Naira respectively.
Nasarawa Amazons now replaced former Nigerian champions, Rivers Angels who could only manage a paltry one point after three matches.
